Menubar

Desktop-style File, Edit and View menus in one bar, with the arrow-key and hover movement of an application menu bar.

c2-menubar is the row of menus at the top of a document or code editor: File, Edit, View. Each menu is a c2-menubar-menu with a label for its trigger, and its children are the rows of a c2-menu: c2-menu-item elements (checkbox and radio rows, shortcuts, descriptions, submenus), <hr> separators and <h1>–<h6> group headings.

The bar is one Tab stop. On a trigger, ArrowLeft and ArrowRight move across the bar, Home and End jump to the ends, and a letter jumps to the next menu that starts with it. Enter, Space or ArrowDown open the menu on its first row, and ArrowUp opens it on its last row. Inside a menu, ArrowRight opens a submenu or, on a plain row, moves to the next menu. ArrowLeft closes a submenu or, at the top level, moves to the previous menu. Escape closes the menu and returns focus to its trigger. With the pointer, a click opens a menu, and while one is open, hovering another trigger switches to it. On the triggers, right-to-left layouts swap the arrow keys; inside a menu they keep the meaning c2-menu gives them.

Picked rows fire menu-select, which bubbles through the bar, so one listener on c2-menubar handles the whole bar. The start and end slots hold what sits beside the menus, such as an app icon, a document title or a “Saved” status. They are outside the menubar role. disabled on a c2-menubar-menu greys out its trigger, and the arrow keys skip it.

Use a menubar for an app that has many commands, such as an editor or a design tool. For site navigation, use c2-navigation-menu. For a few actions, use a c2-menu behind a button.
